Classes in Belgrave
The Phi School runs maths/science classes every Tuesday at the Belgrave Library
Secondary Math and Science
$30 for one, $20 for siblings
Tuesdays 10am to 12pm
January 28 to April 1, 2025

This class combines maths and science in a dynamic, student centred format, where the two subjects are seamlessly integrated based on the topic at hand. The class structure includes a maths session, followed by a short break, and then a science session, but often the two will overlap, allowing you to see how math directly applies to scientific concepts.
In this class, maths is not just a separate subject—it’s deeply connected to the science we explore. Topics will be chosen based on the needs and interests of the students, and will often merge to offer a more holistic understanding of how math can be applied in real-world science. Some examples of the integrated topics include:
-
Algebra: Develop an intimate understanding of formulas, using pendulum play to ascertain the variables in the formula, and how they interact with each other.
-
Trigonometry: Take trigonometry out of the book and bring it alive by measuring the height of a tree, and by drawing a mathematically accurate sine wave using the unit circle. See where else in nature sine waves are found, and learn how a human ear works.
-
Chemistry: Learn how to calculate the number of atoms in real-life materials by combining hands-on measurements with the power of mathematical formulas and scientific reasoning.
-
Biology: Experiment with proteins from your own body to break down the starch found in bread and learn how to present the data collected in a graph
-
Physics: Explore the fascinating concept of spacetime curvature using real-life models that bring the effects of gravity and the bending of space to life in a hands-on, visual way.
In every lesson, you’ll experience how maths is more than just numbers and equations—it’s a tool that unlocks deeper understanding in the world of science.

Primary Math and Science
$30 for one, $20 for siblings
Tuesdays 1pm to 3pm
January 28 to April 1, 2025

This class is designed to inspire curiosity and help young learners build confidence in both maths and science. It’s a flexible, two-part session with maths followed by a short break, then a fun science lesson, although sometimes the two are combined. The content may vary depending on the needs and interests of the students, making each class unique and exciting.

The maths part of the class focuses on core skills, but the topics will adjust depending on where the students are in their learning. Topics might include:
-
Data science: Learn about averages and outliers by counting page numbers in Enid Blyton books, and see first hand how an outlier can dramatically affect the average.
-
Geometry: Develop 2d nets that can be transformed into 3d paper models, and learn about the difference between area and volume. Soak beetroot shapes in bleach to discover the power of surface to volume area ratio in biology, and then how organisms use this for adaptive advantage.
-
Biology: Spectacular tiny molecular machines power our body and our cells. Learn about these through isolating DNA from strawberries, and using proteins from your own body to break down starch.
-
Astronomy: Using a real life model of the earth, the moon, and the sun, students learn how seasons, solstices, day and night are working
-
Circles: Using circular shapes, students calculate their own approximation of pi. Learn about where else this fascinating number appears in nature, and see the beauty and infinite nature of randomness through pi art.
Each lesson is designed to be hands-on and interactive, allowing students to explore and discover new concepts while connecting their learning to the real world.
