Foundational Math and Science

For ages 6 to 9

Foundational Math and Science is a two part course, starting with 50 minutes of introductory math, a twenty minute break and then 50 minutes of science. Most of the science lessons will include a hands on science experiment or practical inquiry. The maths is largely a verbal and visual exploration using tangible resources such as dice, play dough and colour, with an introduction to numerals and mathematical abstraction. It is suitable for younger children who are seeking to be inspired and have their curiosity for math and science grown and nurtured.

The classes will be covering:

- The golden ratio and plants

- Historial counting systems of the Babylonians, Egyptians and Romans

- Acids and bases, and pH testing

- The movement of the Sun. Earth and Moon and how these influence the seasons, night and day and the solstices

- Atoms and the periodic table

- Density, gravity, mass and volume

- Constructing graphs

- DNA and gene pools, natural selection and influences on the gene pool

- Neurones and how we learn

Secondary Math and Science

Tuesdays 10am to 12pm

May 10 to June 21

For ages 12 to 15

This is a two part class, with a maths session, a small break and then a science section.

The mathematics will largely begin with geometry with an aim to understand algebra and the application of formulas. We'll be covering:

- Angles and lines

- Length, Area and Volume, and the three dimensions

- Properties of circles and pi

- Properties of polygons, including regular polygons

- Density, gravity, mass and volume

The science part will cover a broad range of topics including:

- Acids and bases, and pH testing

- The movement of the Sun. Earth and Moon and how these influence the seasons, night and day and the solstices

- Atoms, the periodic table, electrons and atomic bonding

- DNA and gene pools, natural selection and influences on the gene pool

- Neurones and how we learn

- The curvature of space-time

- Cells and their machinery
